How to send large videos on WhatsApp

You record a crisp video, send it on WhatsApp, and the other person gets a blurry, blocky version. That is not your camera. WhatsApp recompresses every video sent as a normal message to save data for the receiver, and the result depends on their connection, not on your file.
There are two ways around it: send a file that is already small enough to pass through untouched, or send the video as a document. This guide explains both and when to use which.
Why videos arrive blurry
A one-minute phone video is 100 to 200 MB at 4K or 40 to 80 MB at 1080p. WhatsApp cannot deliver that to every phone on every network, so it re-encodes the video to a much lower bitrate and often to 480p or lower. A file that is already small and already 720p or less is passed through with little or no change. In practice the threshold where WhatsApp leaves video alone is about 16 MB.
Method 1: compress to 16 MB first
- Open the video compressor for WhatsApp; it is preset to a 16 MB target.
- Drop the video. The first time, the page downloads a 31 MB video engine once and caches it; the video itself never leaves your phone.
- Trim the clip first if you can. Every second you cut gives the rest more quality.
- Press Compress video. The tool calculates the bitrate from the clip's length so the output lands just under 16 MB, at 1080p for clips up to about 30 seconds, 720p up to about 2 minutes, 640p beyond that.
- Send the downloaded MP4 as a normal video. It plays inline and arrives as you made it.
Method 2: send as a document
In the chat, tap the attach icon and choose Document instead of Gallery, then pick the video from your files. WhatsApp sends up to 2 GB this way without recompression. The receiver sees a file to download rather than a playing preview, and large files take long on mobile data. Use this for the original when quality matters more than convenience, for example a wedding clip or a screen recording with small text.
Status videos and groups
Status accepts clips up to 90 seconds; compress first, then trim in WhatsApp if needed. In large groups on slow connections, an 8 MB file downloads for everyone much faster; set the target to 8 instead of 16.
Same trick for Telegram, Discord and e-mail
Telegram allows 2 GB and does not recompress. Discord rejects files over 20 MB on a free account, 50 MB with Nitro Basic. Gmail and Outlook cap attachments at 25 MB, and the encoding adds a third, so 18 to 20 MB is the safe target. The video compressor has preset pages for Discord and e-mail.
Questions
What is the WhatsApp video size limit?
There is no hard limit for normal videos, but anything above roughly 16 MB or above 720p is recompressed heavily. As a document, the limit is 2 GB with no recompression.
Does compressing before sending reduce quality?
You choose the quality once, instead of WhatsApp choosing it for you. A 16 MB file of a one-minute clip at 720p looks far better than what WhatsApp produces from the 80 MB original.
How long does compression take on a phone?
Two to four times the clip length on a mid-range phone, about real time on a laptop. Keep the tab open.
Is my video uploaded to Toolovi?
No. The video engine runs inside your browser and the file stays on your device the whole time.
